Chicken Tales

 Emma's Little Lovelies!

Back in March, Emma adopted two of our lavender pekin chicks and just look at the little lovelies now!

Stunning young ladies who know how to relax and have a good time!

They look very happy and healthy, Emma - all credit to you!

Look at those bright red combs! Emma

 Diane Loves Her Brahmas!

I asked Diane about her wyandottes, as I was considering hatching a few bantam ones out for myself.

Hiya!

We have been so busy coping with this awful weather. We only live about half a mile away from the river Don so we're waiting to see what happens at the moment.
I've got 2 buff orpingtons,1 lavender splash orpington, 2 gold brahmas, a lemon Pyle and a white brahma, and the 2 wyandottes . The wyandottes are a bit skittish compared to the others but the others are quite laid back anyway. I have had them since June last year and haven't had any problems at all with them. I'm totally in love with the brahmas.  Their temperament is so good and those feathered feet are so cute! I also have a flock of hybrids and sell the eggs to help pay for everybody's upkeep.

Tales from Louise!

Here are some great photos sent to me by my chicken buddy, Louise - thanks a lot, Louise!

Contact Louise in Ripon if you are interested in hatching eggs, chicks, cockerels, pullets and ducky things!

This is broody-mum Blondie, buff pekin, with Mouse the tufted miniature Appleyard duck.  Despite Blondie's best efforts, he was the only one to hatch out and could do with some friends!

Shirley is a black frizzle pekin with an unprecedented regal stance!  For those who remember, yes, there is a Pepsi pekin that resides at Louise's!

 Ducklings!

Maurice, the female Muscovy duck, has hatched out 4 cute little ducklings much to Louise's surprise as she thought Maurice wasn't even sitting on fertile eggs!

       Goslings!

This is Gavin the gosling.  His mum was frightened away by a cyclist and Louise is taking care of him and his brother, Gareth.

 Strike a pose!

These white pekins look absolutely stunning and I want some!

This is not a hat!

This is Curly a polish frizzle.  She is a lovely friendly hen and so are her chums, Pammy, Vanessa and Cockerel Patrick.

 Daisy the drake and friends!

These photos show Louise's Muscovy ducks and mainly feature Daisy, who is in fact a drake!  If the cap fits!

 Feeding Frenzy!

A neighbour's happy band of chickens enjoying a morning feast.

Every chicken for themselves!

A good mix of pellets and corn topped off with a few veggies - nothing finer for breakfast!  (16 Jan 2011)

 Well I never ....

For the past couple of weeks my sister's hen, Cleo, has been acting strange and is now cock-a-doodling!  Well, what a turn up for the books!  I don't think 'it' could decide what it was and finally decided at  23 weeks! So it's Clive from now on!!  (12 Nov 2010)

 From a tiny Cleo ...

... to a rather large Clive! Looks obvious now doesn't it!

My dear friend, Joan, recently had some chicken trauma!

She writes:-

How's your chickens?  We aren't having much luck with ours.  We lost one as she was poorly, then we were given 2 birds we thought were a cock and a hen.  Then a fox got over the back fence and killed one of our black rocks and the cock.  Next, Bella our Rhode Island Red went broody.  Whoops! - no fertile eggs, so we did a swap for some from next door.  Sadly, 1 hatched before the others and after 3 days she kicked all the eggs out. Then on the third day we found the little chick dead, but it had been a very cold night.  The remaining white bird has turned out to be another cock!  So now we only have 3 laying hens and a cock.  Hope you are having better luck! (Aug 10)

Happier news from Joan:-

My husband did a favour for the man next door over the weekend so he has given us 3 chicks.  We don't know what sex they are as they are only 3 weeks old. Just like you -  watch them be all cocks!!

Black Rocks are absolutely great layers. Ours laid all through last winter despite the snow, but they are like mini diggers.  If we let them free range they could destroy the lawn within a week.  They can leap about 6' and are never satisfied however much area you give them! (Aug 10)
